Sister Rosemary Mayer, OSM (Sister Mary Paul) 1928–2014
Sister Rosemary Mayer, OSM, (Sister Mary Paul) died August 4, 2014 – four days before her 86th birthday – at Orlando Regional Medical Center, from injuries she suffered in a July 28 automobile accident in Orlando, Fla.
She was born in Chicago, Ill., on August 8, 1928. She joined the Servants of Mary in 1954 and professed first vows in 1956. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Mount Senario College, Ladysmith, Wis., and took post graduate theology courses at Mount Senario.
Sister taught at St. Rose of Lima School in St. Paul, Minn., for several years and served as secretary and treasurer for the Servite Sisters in Ladysmith before moving to Orlando in 1984. In Orlando she worked at BETA Center until she retired in 2003. BETA provides parents with the knowledge and support needed to make strong, healthy families, with a focus on teen mothers and at-risk families,
She volunteered with many civic and religious organizations and was an avid Chicago Cubs’ fan. She was a longtime friend and supporter of Wisconsin State Representative Dave Obey, who served in the House for 48 years.
As Servite treasurer she was instrumental in helping to establish the Sisters’ retirement fund, and in enrolling the Sisters in the U.S. Social Security program.
Sister is survived by her brothers Peter (Marilyn) Mayer, Addison, Ill., Joseph (Josephine) Mayer, Addison, Ill., and William (Patricia) Mayer, Carmel, Ind. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, and Servite Sisters.
She was preceded in death by her parents Peter and Emily Mayer.
