Sister Mary Veronica Davison, OSM 1916 - 2014
Sister Mary Veronica Davison, OSM, 98, died peacefully August 26, 2014, at Addolorata Villa in Wheeling, Ill. At the time of her death, she was the oldest member of the Servite community and, at 81 years professed, the longest professed of any Sister in the community’s 102 year history.
Born in Chippewa Falls, Wis., on September 24, 1916, she grew up in Rice Lake and attended summer catechism classes taught by the Servite Sisters. She entered the convent in 1931 at age 15 and made her first profession of vows in 1933.
Sister received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minn., and a doctorate in music history from the University of Minnesota. From 1934 to 1977, she taught music courses, directed choral and instrumental groups, and gave private lessons to students at all levels. In 1962, while teaching at Servite High School in Ladysmith, she made a record album with the glee club she directed, the Cecilian Choristers, to use as a fundraiser.
She served as assistant archivist for the Servite Friars province in Chicago for three years. In 1980 she was invited to serve as assistant archivist for the Servite Friars Generalate in Rome. She also served as secretary at the Servite Friars Provincial Office in Berwyn, Ill. Prior to retiring in 1999 at age 83, she worked in the office at Servite High School in Anaheim, Cal.
Sister is survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and her Servite Sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Margaret (Chartraw) Davison and her seven siblings.
